The orthopedic and geriatric departments work in unison to enable a thorough evaluation and comprehensive treatment of elderly patients. This helps ensure that the general health of the elderly is taken care of and all medical conditions are evaluated and properly treated. This approach also helps ready the patient for surgery that needs to be undertaken. The treatment and care of these patients do not stop after surgery. It continues in the form of rehabilitation, physiotherapy, etc.
--Joint replacement
This involves consultation, treatment and surgery of arthritis of the hip and knees that have failed non-surgical treatment.
A total hip replacement - also called a hip arthroplasty- is an advanced surgical procedure that re-structures the hip joint region.
Knee replacement surgery procedure
During a knee replacement surgery, the bone and cartilage on the end of the thigh bone (femur) and top of the shin bone (tibia) are removed. This is performed using precision instruments to create exact surfaces to fit the implant. A metal and plastic knee replacement implant is then fitted in to function as a new knee joint.
