| Medical tourism or medical travel occurs when international patients travel across | boundaries for their healthcare and medical needs. In 2002, Singapore received 210,000 healthcare visitors and 320,000 in 2004, an increase of around 52% over a period of two years. The Prime Minister recently announced that Singapore received 374,000 healthcare visitors in 2005. For many years now Singapore has been the destination of choice for people seeking good quality medical care. In the year 1996, Singapore witnessed some 226,000 medical visitors but the figures fell after the peak of 327,000 in the year 1997 because of the South East Asian Economic Crisis.
